Anesthesia

Going to the dentist today is a positive experience filled with the anticipation of looking better through the use of porcelain veneers and whitening and knowing that you are taking good care of your dental health. Pain is a thing of the past thanks to advances in anesthetics and improvements in dental techniques. All Smile Dental is dedicated to keeping you pain free throughout your dental experience; whether this is a simple filling or a complex implant procedure we have the right pain management tools to make you comfortable. This includes while you are with your dentist and after you go home.

All Smile Dental uses a combination of anesthetics, sedatives and analgesics to keep patients pain free. Novacaine and Lidocaine are the two most commonly used anesthetics in dentistry. These are nerve blockers that numb the mouth enabling the dentist to do common procedures such as filling a cavity, setting a crown or replacing an amalgam filling. Before the injected anesthetic is used your dentist will first apply a topical anesthetic to numb the injection point thereby preventing any possible discomfort caused by the injection. Topical anesthetics are also used for minor cosmetic restorations and bonding procedures as well as in dental emergency situations such as resetting a temporary crown.

Sedation is often used in combination with other pain management medications and is particularly useful for very nervous patients. Sedatives relax the body and make it possible for the dentist to perform dental procedures such as dental implants, extractions and complex root canals. Sedation is administered either through inhalation (often nitrous oxide) or intravenously. Sometimes it is necessary for the dentist to put a patient under deep sedation or general anesthesia. This isn't uncommon with very small children.

Analgesics are pain relievers that are given post-operatively to control any discomfort that might occur during healing. A commonly prescribed analgesic is ibuprofen. Analgesics are also helpful for dealing with discomfort that can arise from dentures, clear Invisalign braces or toothaches until a patient can get into the dentist's office to address the problem.

All Smile Dental makes your comfort one of our main priorities. Feel free to discuss any concerns or fears you may have about pain and discomfort with your dentist. Given the wide variety of pain management tools available today All Smile Dental will leave you smiling rather than dreading the dentist's chair.
